Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
On April 10, 2009, the Ventura County Workforce Investment
Board (WIB) received official notification of local area
allocations under the American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) - Workforce Investment
Act (WIA).

Stimulus Funds at work in Ventura County
The
WIB administers these ARRA - WIA stimulus funding
totaling $7,665,534. While these funds cannot address
all of the challenges facing Ventura County, the WIB Board
will ensure that these monies will be used to expand educational
and training opportunities that will build a skilled workforce,
match skilled workers to job openings, provide business
services and transition support to local employers and
for the operation of the 2009 Youth@Work summer program.
2009
Youth@Work Summer Program
The WIB's summer youth jobs program is operated through
two primary youth program contractors who sub-contract
with education and community-based organizations.
Positions are available for over 600 youth, ages 14 to
24, all of whom face at least one barrier to employment.
Barriers to employment include being a foster youth, a
teen parent, in the juvenile justice system, and/or having
a disability.
These Youth participate in an 8-hour training
course that covers work readiness, teamwork, and leadership
skills. Jobs range from 60 to 192 hours, at $8 per
hour. Approximately half of the jobs are in the
private sector; the other half are in the public sector.
Summer jobs available for youth include retail, customer
service, hospitality, industrial manufacturing, technology,
food services, and human services.
